The iconic late seventies Hallenbad Oerlikon is soon to be replaced by a hypermodern and energy-efficient sports centre that combines extended swimming facilities with ice skating. Departing from the claim that the Hallenbad Oerlikon should be listed because of its unique architectural quality, the master thesis offers an alternative to this scenario of demolition and replacement. A careful renovation and extension of the existing Hallenbad integrates the extended swimming programme, improves its overall energetic performance while conserving some of its iconic fragments such as the dressing rooms and the roofscapes. The proposed design carefully maintains and builds upon the Hallenbad’s existing architectural logic and language to update the building’s functionality while reinstating its original splendour.
