In 2007, the Werkhof was constructed, becoming a crucial urban workplace in Oerlikon. Made of concrete and glass, it contributes to the aesthetics of the area while storing urban resources. Responding to Zurich's growing need to augment capacity and density, our project is intended to enhance Oerlikon's densification.
Despite facing challenges such as noise from the Werkhof and nearby railways, we embraced these as opportunities to create a unique project. We introduced a Laubengang that not only reduces noise but also serves as circulation and recreational space. The courtyard now partially provides spaces for activities the Werkhof is not in use. Moreover, a new canteen has been established to foster social activities for workers, artists, and residents.
Our design incorporates protruding balconies, windows, and the Laubengang, deviating from the fate of the adjacent one-dimensional building facade. We've preserved the original structure's character by incorporating Reglit glass and reinforced concrete slabs, while reimagining vertical and horizontal elements using undulating aluminum and balustrades.
The result is a harmonious coexisting environment for both workers and inhabitants, striking a balance between work and living. A central cafeteria serves as a nexus, creating an atmosphere conducive to a pleasant symbiosis. This project underscores the crucial intertwining of work and living, thereby highlighting the importance of their coexistence in urban life.
